Luyanda Vilakazi started Smart Tech Puncture Proof in Jabulani, Soweto, after seeing how often everyday drivers struggled with damaged tyres on poor roads.
His product uses nano-technology to seal punctures the moment they happen. Unlike traditional tyres or run-flat tyres, the solution keeps air inside the tyre even when a nail or sharp object pierces it. Vilakazi said the product does not affect tyre balance and can extend a tyre’s lifespan by three to five years.
He said poor road conditions in areas like Soweto made the product especially useful for local drivers.
Getting customers to trust the technology was not easy at first.
“Many people were sceptical at first, but the product actually improves tyre lifespan, reduces noise and gives drivers peace of mind,” Vilakazi said.
Social media helped turn things around. Vilakazi said the online response from the public had been strong and that people were excited about what the product could do.
He plans to grow the business beyond Gauteng and into international markets, and said he also wants to create jobs as the company expands.
He had simple advice for anyone thinking about starting their own business.
“No matter how small the idea, start,” he said.
