- Seven southern African teams qualify for Afcon 2025, more than any other African region.
- Botswana and Mozambique grabbed last-minute spots with crucial results.
The Cosafa region will send a record seven teams to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Botswana grabbed the last spot on Tuesday.
The Zebras, led by South African coach Morena Ramoreboli and former Kaizer Chiefs defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, held Egypt to a 1-1 draw in Cairo to reach only their second Afcon.
Mozambique also squeezed through with a 2-1 away win over Guinea-Bissau to finish second behind Mali in Group I.
They join South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola and Comoros in making history. Cosafa now has more teams at the finals than West Africa’s six qualifiers.
North Africa and Central Africa each have four teams going to Morocco 2025, while East Africa (Cecafa) will send three teams: Uganda, Sudan and Tanzania.
Qualified teams by region:
Cosafa: South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, Comoros.
WAFU A & B: Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Benin, Burkina Faso.
UNAF: Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria.
UNIFFAC: Cameroon, DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon.
Cecafa: Uganda, Sudan, Tanzania.
