Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.
Pietermaritzburg: NFP leadership in KwaZulu-Natal has defied their President Ivan Barnes by showing up at the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday to support fired MEC for Social Development Mbali Shinga.
Shinga went to court to block Barnes from replacing her as a member of the KZN Legislature after the party’s Appeals Committee expelled her.
KZN leaders of the NFP made it clear they will support Shinga through thick and thin as she fights for her survival in the Legislature. Barnes is expected to be sworn in on Thursday at the full sitting of the Legislature in Pietermaritzburg after the NFP submitted a revised list to Speaker Nontembeko Boyce. Boyce stated that Shinga’s court battle is an internal NFP matter that has nothing to do with Legislature processes.
Durban: Police in KwaZulu-Natal have issued a stern warning to residents to refrain from posting, distributing or sharing voice messages or social media content that promotes violence or the destruction of property.
Police say the province has been experiencing a wave of marches which have largely been peaceful, but they have noted with concern social media posts and public statements by certain individuals that have the potential to incite violence and lawlessness during planned marches.
Van Reenen Pass: The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, through the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, is urging residents, motorists and farmers to stay vigilant as a severe weather system moves across parts of the country.
According to the South African Weather Service, an intense cut-off low pressure system is bringing bitterly cold, wet and windy conditions to several provinces. COGTA has reassured motorists, truck drivers and the public that the expected snow is not anticipated to cause disruptions or closures on the Van Reenen Pass section of the N3 highway.
