Kwaito artist Mgarimbe’s song “Sister Bethina” became an instant hit when it was recorded during a club performance 15 years ago.
Since then, the track has accrued legendary status, with many calling it South Africa’s de facto national anthem.
But times change and some have pointed out that the song needs updating – to be remixed to get an amapiano touch.
The song will be remixed by legendary house DJ Cleo. On his official Twitter page @djcleo1, he wrote: “#SistaBethinaRemix out sooSTREET MUSIC dropping soon”.
Mgarimbe, who has faded into obscurity after that smashing song, said he still gets booked around the country just for the song.
Carrying an Aaliyah sample from “Try Again”, the song contained dirty lyrics which, in order for it to get radio airplay, had to be edited.
With SA’s Amabhokobhoko recently using it on their match days when they play locally, the song has been revived. Mgarimbe said he has since been approached by DJ Cleo for the remix.
“When I posted on my socials about this request many of my fans had mixed feelings. Some feel it ought not to be changed because it will lose its originality. DJ Cleo says he will add an amapiano touch on the song. I have since agreed to let him work on it because I know his touch,” said the Umlazi-born artist.
Mgarimbe, whose real name is Nkosinathi Mfeka, admitted that he never thought the song would reach cult status. It still enjoys radio airplay and is appreciated in the clubs.
“While I was away from the limelight I have been making a living through odd jobs to keep wolves from the door,” said Mgarimbe.
But now he is working on a new project that he said will blow music lovers away.
