It’s the fourth time in a row that Mamelodi Sundowns have won the PSL championship, and they’ve done it at a canter.
A massive 13-point gap separated the Brazilians from second-placed AmaZulu. In the last eight seasons of PSL football, Sundowns have won six and finished second in the remaining two.
Simply put, Masandawana have the desire and the drive to be the best and it shows on the field. No other South African team puts as much pressure on themselves as Sundowns. Even in victory they are always looking for areas to improve their game and grow as a squad.
While many South African squads rely on individuals to elevate the team, Sundowns are a team that functions as one. At a time when Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are struggling, it may be many years until we see a new champion crowned.
The Pretoria-based outfit have won five Nedbank Cups, four Telkom Knockouts, three MTN 8 titles, as well as one CAF Champions League title.
The club swept the floor with their competitors in the PSL awards, with new signing Peter Shalulile winning player of the season as well as the player’s player of the season. Themba Zwane claimed the midfielder of the season, with Denis Onyango winning goalkeeper of the season.
Many thought the departure of long-term manager Pitso Mosimane would derail the team but the coaching trio of Rulani Mokweba, Manqoba Mngqhiti and Steve Kompela have done a great job in keeping the Brazilians at the top of their game.
