After spending the last 39 years in a coma, Jean-Pierre Adams has passed away.
In 1982, Adams suffered a knee injury which required surgery but was accidentally administered a near fatal dosage of anesthetic.
The dose caused severe brain damage and put the footballer, who was born in Dakar, Senegal, into a coma.
The 73-year-old, who represented France was pronounced dead on Monday at the Nimes University Hospital.
Born in 1948, Adams made 22 appearances for the French national team.
He had spells in the French first division with Paris Saint-Germain as well as in Nice, where he spent the majority of his career.
Adams became concerned about his knee when taking up coaching courses in Dijon and went to a hospital in Lyon for a checkup.
The results showed Adams had suffered damage to the tendon at the back of his knee and required surgery, according to the Blizzard.
In the leadup to the operation, the African-born footballer told his wife: “It’s all fine, I’m in great shape.”
Sadly, those were the lost words he ever spoke to his wife.
The doctors in charge of the operation were later charged and brought to court in a case which took seven years to conclude.
The judge at the Seventh Chamber of Correctional Tribunal in Lyon found the doctors guilty of involuntary injury.
Adam’s wife provided the public with an update in 2007, saying: “Jean-Pierre feels, smells, hears, jumps when a dog barks. But he cannot see.”
