Scrolla.Africa’s Premier League disappointments

In a season where there were several losers to choose from, Scrolla.Africa lists the biggest disappointments across the Premier League.

Chelsea’s chaotic circus

Chelsea’s tumultuous season could easily fill an entire page with their flops. Under the bewildered Frank Lampard, the team went on a losing streak in late April, actually raising concerns about relegation.

Despite spending close to £600m on transfers, their decision-making left fans scratching their heads. From the mysterious departure of Thomas Tuchel to the squad being bloated with players, including their struggle to sign a striker beyond Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (who was signed by Tuchel only to be sacked shortly after), Chelsea’s actions lacked coherence.

Conte and Tottenham’s turmoil

Last August, the Premier League title race seemed to be between Manchester City and Liverpool. But Tottenham, under the guidance of Antonio Conte, appeared as a contender.

However, tensions between Conte and the club soon arose, leading to a series of unfortunate events. Tragedy struck when Conte lost key members of his support staff and his own health issues forced him to take a leave of absence. While still in fourth place, a snarling Conte publicly criticised Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy before parting ways with the club.

Leicester’s fall from grace

Leicester City, the champions of 2016 and FA Cup winners in 2021, struggled to maintain their success.

Starting the season with just one point from seven matches, their decline was very obvious. Brendan Rodgers’ decision to keep Wout Faes, who went from being an inspiration to a liability, showcased the manager’s waning touch. The late-season alliance of Dean Smith, John Terry, and Craig Shakespeare couldn’t save them from relegation on the final day. Bad decisions haunted Leicester throughout the season.

Klopp’s changing demeanour at Liverpool

Liverpool’s usually amiable and charismatic manager, Jürgen Klopp, displayed a different side this season.

He became increasingly confrontational with the media, even lashing out at a few reporters. His behaviour towards officials during the game against Tottenham was widely criticised.

Klopp’s frustration stemmed from Liverpool’s disappointing year, trailing behind Manchester City. Questions are now being raised about the club’s setup, especially with the departure of key back-office staff.
