The leadership of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in KwaZulu-Natal has refused to expel former president Jacob Zuma as their chairperson despite pressure from the ANC.
The leadership of Sanco, which is an alliance partner of the ANC, announced during a media briefing in Durban on Wednesday that Zuma’s decision came after a great deal of disrespect was shown to him by the ANC’s KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo and chairperson Sboniso Duma.
Sanco secretary Sizwe Cele said that they had had enough of the bullying from the ANC’s provincial secretary.
“First of all, Zuma raised his concerns about the ANC before he decided to form the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. He was complaining about the ANC, not Sanco. Therefore as Sanco, we won’t fire him.
“He is still our provincial chairperson. It would have been an offence if he’d joined another civic organisation. This is their negligence for Zuma to go to another party because they are sleeping on duty,” said Cele.
He said the ANC’s negligence towards members of the uMkhonto weSizwe Veterans has resulted in the formation of Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe Party.
Sanco deputy secretary Lucky Hadebe said that they would take action against Zuma and label him as a sellout if he decided to join AfriForum or Freedom Front Plus.
The Sanco leadership said that they are tired of being undermined by the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal.
They claim that even on the deployment of alliance leaders to municipalities and Parliament, they are overlooked.
Scrolla.Africa has learned that the Sanco KZN secretary is number 72 on the ANC list to the KZN Legislature.
Hadebe said that Zuma’s move will not affect the ANC only but the IFP is also directly affected because his popularity is gaining momentum with his new party in the province.
