Ronaldo drinks water – Coca-Cola takes a R55 billion knock!

What’s wrong with drinking water? Nothing.

Unless it’s Cristiano Ronaldo in a live television interview. In which case it can cost billions!

On Monday the footballer, a known health fanatic, removed the two Coca-Cola bottles in front of him during a press conference and followed it up by holding up a bottle of water, encouraging others to hydrate with water instead of the sweet fizzy drink.

According to The Guardian, Coca-Cola’s share price immediately dropped by 1.6%.

The market value of Coca-Cola went from $242 billion (about R3,300 trillion) to $238 billion (R3,200 trillion) – a drop of about R55 billion.

Coca-Cola, an official sponsor of Euro 2020, responded through a statement: “Everyone is entitled to their drink preferences, with different tastes and needs.”

A competition spokesperson said: “Players are offered water, Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero on arrival at press conferences.”

On Tuesday night the Juventus forward guided Portugal to a 3-0 win over Hungary in both teams’ first match in Group F. Ronaldo scored a brace that saw him break French great Michel Platini’s scoring record.

He is now a record goalscorer at the European Championship with 11 and is likely to add more to his name with the tournament still in its early stages. Ronaldo is now four goals short of breaking Iranian Ali Daei’s record as the world’s all-time leading goalscorer in the history of international football.

On Tuesday he also made history by becoming the first player to have played in five European Championships. Portuguese fans will expect him to be on top of his game when they take on Germany on Saturday.

The 2014 World Champions are heading to this match having lost 1-0 to France on Tuesday night. On Saturday, France will take on Hungary in another Group F match.
