Nonkululeko Hlongwane-Mhlongo, the premier candidate for Rise Mzansi in KwaZulu-Natal, claims corruption at schools in the province is out of hand.
She made the remarks at the launch of the Rise Mzansi manifesto in Durban.
Hlongwane-Mhlongo said the party wants to change school principals’ appointment processes to fight corruption.
There have been claims that school principal posts in KZN were being sold, a fact that was exposed in 2015 by the commission of inquiry formed by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.
Last year, a school principal in northern KZN was suspended for allegedly bribing school governing body members with three cattle and R120,000 cash to secure his appointment.
Hlongwane-Mhlongo said that the education system needs to be cleaned up to avoid such corruption.
“We will adopt a zero-tolerance approach in the education sector against corruption, especially around procurement and the appointment of school principals,” she said.
At 37, Hlongwane-Mhlongo is the youngest woman KZN premier candidate.
