Orlando Pirates could lose out on their star striker Gabadinho Mhango, who is attracting interest from Europe following his brilliant performances for Malawi at Afcon.

The striker’s agents at ProSport International claim that Mhango has gained several admirers abroad.

“I am not sure how serious things are but there has been some action with regards to his future,” a source said.

“He could be headed for a move to a European country in the near future. I understand Orlando Pirates will be willing to let him go should a good offer come along.”

The 29-year-old is somewhat underappreciated at Pirates, making only four league appearances in the 2021/22 campaign thus far. However, the Buccaneers are scrambling to convince Mhango to sign a one-year contract extension at the club.

Mhango went into this year’s Afcon tournament unsure of his future with the Soweto club but the striker scored some phenomenal goals in Cameroon, including a mind-blowing long-range effort against Morocco.

“The club was even thinking of using him for a swap deal with Royal AM for Victor Letsoalo. But I think they may have changed their minds now that he has reminded them what he is capable of when he is in the right frame of mind,” another source said.

The Malawian superstar ended his tournament with a total of three goals in as many matches, showcasing that he is capable of being mentioned among the very best in Africa.

Mhango joined Pirates in 2019 from the now defunct Bidvest Wits but he has failed to impress the supporters of the Soweto giants. He has only found the back of the net on 21 occasions in his 54 league appearances.

Pirates may still look to offload Mhango during the June-July transfer window as his value would have increased tremendously following his performance in Cameroon.
