Ramokgopa and Didiza to team up for ANC top job

  • Sources say the two leaders met privately at the national general council to discuss building a strong team.
  • They face tough competition from Paul Mashatile and Oscar Mabuyane as the race to replace Ramaphosa begins.

The race to replace President Cyril Ramaphosa is already heating up.

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is reportedly laying the groundwork for a shot at the ANC leadership.

According to Business Day, Ramokgopa is in talks to team up with National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza.

The two were spotted in private meetings at the party’s National General Council this week. Sources say they are discussing a joint run for the positions of president and deputy president in 2027.

“These are exploratory talks,” a source close to Ramokgopa said.

Both politicians have deep roots in Tshwane. Ramokgopa was mayor from 2010 to 2016. Didiza was the candidate meant to replace him, though the party lost the city to the DA that year.

They are not the only ones making moves.

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane is also eyeing a top spot. He is believed to be aligned with current Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

While the politicians plot their futures, Ramaphosa remains safe for now.

Delegates gave him a warm welcome at the conference. There were no calls for him to step down early.

Ramaphosa defended his decision to form a unity government with the DA, telling members it was necessary for peace and progress.
