South Africa ensured the score would be 1-1 heading into the Gauteng leg of their four-game T20 international series against India.
Following the world champions’ 61-run thrashing of the Proteas in Durban on Friday, the hosts came back with a bang after winning the toss and opting to field first in Gqeberha on Sunday.
Sanju Samson’s century two days ago was a large part of India’s victory; hence this time, South Africa knew he would have to go early.
The dangerous opener was one of three powerplay wickets to fall as captain Suryakumar Yadav, too, was dismissed for just four.
Hardik Pandya got the most runs for the men in blue lower down the order as the Mumbai Indians skipper hit an unbeaten 39. It came off 45 balls though, with the visitors finishing on a below-par 124/6 off their 20 overs.
In response, Varun Chakaravarthy quickly made India’s total look like a fighting one.
The spinner took 5/17 in a remarkable four over spell; and still, ended up on the losing side.
Tristan Stubbs (47 off 41) was the star for South Africa, staying at the crease to guide them home to a three wicket win.
India’s defeat comes after 11 straight T20 wins; with the visitors surely looking to bounce back instantly when they take to the field for the penultimate clash at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday.
