‘Prof, don’t insult King Misuzulu again!’

By Celani Sikhakhane

Dr Cedric Xulu, the prime minister of the Xulu clan from Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal, has warned Zulu cultural expert Professor Musa Xulu not to disrespect King Misuzulu kaZwelithini again.

Prof Xulu recently called King Misuzulu a “political opportunist” on his Indonsa Yesizwe WhatsApp group and said the King wanted to interfere with the running of the KwaZulu-Natal government.

His comments came after King Misuzulu said he was angry with the KZN government for firing his praise singer iNyosi Buzetsheni Mdletshe

Dr Xulu wrote to the professor this week to say the clan is unhappy with his comments.

Xulu’s letter said the professor’s life may be in danger because of the number of people his comments had angered.

“You keep on undermining the traditional leaders’ structure in a very disappointing manner,”

Dr Xulu wrote. “You seem to have forgotten that you are from the Xulu royal house of Odidini in Nkandla and of the role that was played by our great-grandfather to help the Zulu King in a fight against the British army at Isandlwana in 1879.”

Dr Xulu accused the professor of using his Indonsa Yesizwe WhatsApp group to insult King Misuzulu.

Prof Xulu responded and told Dr Xulu that they could remove him from the Xulu clan structure because he was an academic, not a tribalist.

“Why are you all concerned about my academic work and comments? You never said anything when King Misuzulu kaZwelithini was insulting Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi,” he said.

“Please don’t start me up. Just remove me from the clan and stay away from my academic programmes.”

Xulu maintained that ANC KZN chair Siboniso Duma was right to grab the microphone from the King’s traditional prime minister, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, during a commemoration event last month for King Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo.
