There are mounting calls across the country for schools to close because of the Covid-19 surge.
On Tuesday, teachers in Alexandra held a peaceful social distancing march to protest about schools staying open.
Teachers said a number of their colleagues from different schools in the township and other parts of the country have tested positive.
They are pleading with the government to close schools for the safety of the kids and their own.
Some Alex schools have already closed because of virus outbreaks.
In Tembisa, five schools have been closed by concerned community members, some pictured above.
“Most of these children are looked after by their grandparents. By letting the schools operate, it only means killing the community especially the elderly with low immune systems,” said Michelle, one of the Alex protesters.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga was due to meet teacher unions on Wednesday, but the meeting was cancelled.
