- Vincent Magwenya says the report will stay secret because witnesses still need to be recalled for questioning.
- Public hearings into corruption and political interference will resume in January.
The public will not get to see the Madlanga Commission’s interim findings just yet.
The Presidency has confirmed that the report will remain under wraps.
Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says the reason is simple: the work is not finished.
“This is an interim report, and there is still more evidence that is going to be heard,” Magwenya explained.
The Commission is investigating serious claims of political interference, corruption, and criminal behaviour within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
It has completed phase one, which dealt with the main allegations. Parts of phase two, where implicated people give their side of the story, have also been covered.
However, Magwenya noted that some witnesses who have already testified are expected to be called back when the hearings resume.
Because the evidence is incomplete, releasing the document now would be premature.
Magwenya confirmed that the Commission is expected to continue with public hearings in January next year.
