- Thabang Nkadimeng says Tsakani police officers assaulted him and stole R500 when he tried to report a crime.
- Gauteng police have promised to investigate claims of assault, theft and failure to help at Tsakani Police Station.
A man says police beat him and stole his money when he tried to report a crime at Tsakani Police Station in Ekurhuleni.
Thabang Nkadimeng went to report someone pointing a gun at him on 3 November. But officers said they couldn’t help because their network and phones weren’t working.
“One of the officers insulted me when I asked how this was possible,” Nkadimeng told Scrolla.Africa.
“They then beat me and dragged me to the holding cells. They took my belt, shoelaces and R500 cash before pouring cold water on me. I kept asking what crime I had committed but none of them would help me,” he said.
The cops let him go at 5am but threatened to arrest him again when he asked for his money back.
“I went home to get my grandmother and we went back to open a case and get my money,” he said.
“The officers refused to help or give their names. One asked what I was doing there, saying they’d solved my case. I asked which case they’d solved when they won’t open a case against the officer or give me back my money.”
Nkadimeng wants the officers who beat him when he needed help to be officially reprimanded.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said they will talk to Nkadimeng and send the case to the SAPS Inspectorate.
“Claims about the assault, stolen money and police not opening the case will all be investigated,” she said.
