The family of slain police Constable Eric Moswang were relieved after the Johannesburg High Court sentenced the killers David Mokubung, 39, and Thato Motaung, 31, to two life sentences.
They were sentenced to a further 55 years in jail for attempted murder, possession of military automatic rifles, house robbery and bombing.
Seven years ago Moswang was shot by a group of armed robbers while responding to a business robbery at a factory.
He succumbed to his injuries after two months in a coma. A security officer was also killed while responding to the robbery.
Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, Moswang’s police partner Lerato Monyane said while patrolling the area they identified a security company car speeding in the direction of the business site before they heard gunshots.
“We immediately drove to the scene and found the robbery still active; the suspects started shooting at us, injuring Moswang. They were brutal; they intended to kill anything and anyone standing in their way.
“I was lucky to have survived the shooting,” she said.
The suspects were arrested two months after the shooting through DNA identification after they were arrested for another incident.
The officer’s brother, Peter Moswang, said though the ruling will not bring his life back, it gives them comfort that the accused will never enjoy their freedom ever again.
“They didn’t show any remorse during the court appearances and came across as arrogant. There was a time when we lost faith in the justice system since the matter was dragging on in court.
“Our wish is for the other members of the gang to be arrested so that they too can pay for their crimes,” he said.
