- The Polish army shot down Russian war drones that flew into the country during attacks on Ukraine.
- Airports closed and families took shelter as this was the first NATO country to destroy Russian aircraft.
Polish families living near the Ukraine border faced real danger on Sunday when Russian drones crossed into their country.
Poland’s army shot down the drones during Russian attacks on Ukraine. This is the first time a NATO country has destroyed Russian aircraft over its own land.
“This is an attack that puts our people in real danger,” Poland’s army said.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the attack had a “huge number” of drones. He warned this was likely a “big provocation” and told families that Poland is “ready to fight back” against such attacks.
The scare made Warsaw Airport and other airports close for a while. Families had to look for shelter before airports opened again.
Poland’s army thanked the Netherlands for sending fighter jets to help protect Polish skies during the night.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said at least eight drones were aimed at Poland. He called it “very dangerous for Europe.”
War experts think Russia may have done this on purpose to test how NATO countries would fight back against direct attacks on their land, CNN reported.
Poland’s defence minister got local forces to look for crashed drone pieces. He told families to stay calm and report any pieces they find.
This comes after Russia sent its biggest air attacks on Ukraine since the war started. Last weekend Russia sent 800 drones into Ukraine, killing 24 people in one strike.
Poland has now closed its border with Belarus because of joint army training between Russia and its friend.
