Political parties in eThekwini are facing fines of nearly R1-million per ward for not removing election posters after the 29 May general elections.
“Political parties were required to remove election posters within 30 days after the election date,” read a statement from the City’s communication unit following the end of the removal period on the last day of June.
“EThekwini Municipality, through its General Advertising Branch, has commenced the removal of election campaign material from electricity street poles and other municipal infrastructure.”
The City will charge R1.193 per poster.
Signage inspectors began removing the posters on 1 July and will impose fines on political parties once the process is complete.
Political parties and independent candidates were allowed a maximum of 800 posters per ward.
The only party that met the removal deadline was Rise Mzansi, whose volunteers were seen in June removing posters from various areas of Durban, from suburbs to townships.
Other parties, including ActionSA, IFP, The Good Party, uMkhonto WeSizwe, ANC, ACDP, and DA still have posters on electricity poles from King Shaka International Airport along the N2 to the Durban City Centre.
