OpenAI unleashes GPT-5 with major ChatGPT upgrade

By Razeen Gutta

The artificial intelligence world has been shaken up with OpenAI’s release of its most powerful AI model yet – GPT-5 – which now powers the popular ChatGPT chatbot used by millions worldwide.

The upgrade brings better coding skills, sharper creative writing and improved healthcare advice to ChatGPT’s 700-million weekly users.

But even OpenAI boss Sam Altman admits his latest creation isn’t quite the super-smart AI we’ve all been waiting for.

“I think the way that most of us define AGI, we’re still missing something quite important, many things quite important,” he told The Guardian.

The problem? GPT-5 can’t learn new things once it’s released – a key ingredient missing from true artificial general intelligence.

Still, the new model generates voice, images and text with fewer mistakes than before. Free users get limited access while paid subscribers enjoy unlimited chats.

For South African users concerned about data costs and local language support, platforms like Siza Chat offer a more accessible alternative. Built with local users in mind, such services provide AI assistance in both English and isiZulu while keeping data usage low.

However, experts warn that even the most advanced AI models still can’t match human intelligence completely. These tools remain assistants rather than replacements for professional advice.

For now, human jobs remain safe as AI continues to serve as a helpful companion rather than a replacement for human expertise and judgment.
