One beat, one Africa: Floda Grae sings for peace

By Celani Sikhakhane

  • KwaMashu singer Floda Grae teams up with Maskandi star Mzukulu on Grae Season to mix Afrobeat with South African sounds.
  • Song collection A Graé Season drops on platforms as Floda Grae joins List Entertainment and pushes African unity through music.

Floda Grae wants her music to bring Africans together, and her new single Grae Season is her latest attempt to do that.

The track blends Afrobeat and Maskandi to create a sound that reaches across the continent.

Grae Season features popular Maskandi artist Mzukulu, who brings a strong South African feel to the song.

Floda says she chose him because of his talent and because he can switch easily between Afrobeat and Maskandi. “I chose Mzukulu because he’s incredibly talented,” said Floda.
“He can work magic in Afrobeat while still shining in Maskandi. That’s what makes this track special.”

The single uses beats from Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa to promote unity and peace in Africa.

Floda says the idea is to remind people that their dreams are still possible, even when they feel too old to chase them.

Born in KwaMashu, north of Durban, Floda started singing at the age of 12.

She married Bhinca Nation President Ngizwe Mchunu in 2015 as his third wife and filed for divorce in January 2024.

Grae Season is part of her new collection of songs, A Graé Season, which dropped last Friday on all major digital platforms.

Now signed to powerhouse label List Entertainment, home to artists like Wizkid, DJ Spinall and Tiwa Savage, Floda is carving out her space in the Afrobeat scene and growing her fanbase in South Africa and across the continent.
