Tokyo Olympics, Day Two. South African polo players in deep water

South Africans had a tough day two of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with losses in both the water polo and hockey events. 

The men’s water polo side lost 21-2 against Italy while the women’s side suffered a 29-4 defeat against Spain. 

The men’s hockey team slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Great Britain and the women’s side was beaten 2-0 by Ireland. Next, the men face the tough Netherlands side at 2:15pm with the women taking on Great Britain at 11:30am on day three. 

The men’s rowing pair finished fifth, while the men’s cycling road race saw Stefan de Bod finish 52nd. Nicholas Dlamini and Ryan Gibbons didn’t finish.

Swimmers Erin Gallagher (100m butterfly) and Michael Houlie (100m breaststroke) both finished 8th. 

Novak Djokovic continued his journey towards a ‘Golden Slam’ with a victory in the tennis men’s singles against Hugo Dellien in straight sets. The world number one battled with the Tokyo heat, suffering from dizziness as the temperatures soared over 30 degrees Celsius. 

Skateboarding made its debut as an Olympic sport on day two in two different disciplines, street and park. The men’s street competition will be held on day three with the women’s contest taking place on day four. 

Going into day three, China is on top of the medal chart with four gold medals and eight medals in total. Japan is second with three gold and four medals in total. The United States is third with two gold and eight medals in total.
