The Zondo Commission report slammed the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) failures to take on state capture, saying it had “failed to prosecute cases of corruption, and specifically cases of corruption in the procurement process.”
Now the NPA has announced the formation of a task force to review the findings of the first of the three State Capture Inquiry reports.
The Zondo Commission handed its report to President Cyril Ramaphosa last week.
The report went on to recommend that an independent anti-corruption unit be established to tackle widespread corruption.
In a joint statement made with the Hawks on Wednesday, the NPA said the task force will review the findings recommended by the first report.
“In response to the commission’s first report, the NPA has created a dedicated task force within the NPA, coordinated at the highest levels,” the statement read.
The NPA and the Hawks went on to promise that they will be “systematically reviewing the commission’s findings and recommendations, with a view to investigating and building cases for criminal prosecution against those who broke the law, be they from the public or private sectors.”
The NPA also acknowledged the failures highlighted by the report and commended the Zondo Commission in its statement.
