No winner declared in “freak show” boxing match

It was an exhibition match in all senses of the word.

A ridiculous match-up of Floyd Mayweather and YouTuber Logan Paul went the full eight rounds at a fight that took place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Perhaps it should have been held in a circus tent.

Both fighters will feel like winners as they come out millions of dollars richer. Mayweather doesn’t have the nickname of “Money” for nothing.

Mayweather (50-1 favourite) said after the fight: “I had fun. You’ve got to realise I’m not 21 anymore but it’s good to move around with these guys”.

Paul said how proud he was of himself to go the distance with the greatest boxer of all time. He jokingly suggested he was not sure if Mayweather took it easy on him and allowed him to survive the fight.

There were no judges present, with a knockout being the only method to potentially win the fight. Sadly this bout can be characterised by Paul, who now has a record of one fight and zero wins, holding on while Mayweather walked him around the ring, landing 40% of his blows.

Paul, 16cm taller and 15kg heavier than Mayweather, landed 28 of 217 punches thrown.

It’s hard to imagine what spectators were hoping for as they watched what was little more than a freak show (watching on a pay-per-view basis on TV or at the stadium) but Paul was loudly booed for wrestling Mayweather more than he boxed him.
