No transport, so children learn under trees

By Zukile Majova

It is back to learning under trees for the learners of two Eastern Cape schools that are protesting to ask that the provincial government supply them with scholar transport.

On Monday they took on the might of the state when they barricaded the R63 road between Qonce (King William’s Town) and Cumakala (Stutterheim).

The police responded by firing teargas at the learners from Nothenga Primary School and Nangamso Senior Secondary School.

The Grade 12 learners said they missed writing tests in isiXhosa and Agriculture on Monday.

On Tuesday, the learners in uniform gathered under trees but some from distant villages could not walk to the makeshift venue in the sweltering heat.

Khula Community Project, a not-for-profit children’s rights group, is in ongoing meetings with the Eastern Cape Transport Department to resolve the dispute.

The learners and the community want scholar transport for learners who walk five to 10km to school every day.
