Matric markers claim they’re still owed money

Teachers in KwaZulu-Natal, who were contracted to mark matric final exam papers, claim the provincial education department owes them money.

The teachers say their transport expenses were supposed to be paid in January but still haven’t been settled.

One of the teachers, who spoke to Scrolla.Africa anonymously, said: “We are in pain because we used our savings to go to marking stations for the whole months of November and December but the department has not paid us.”

The teacher said the markers were supposed to be paid about R6,000 for petrol depending on the distance they had to travel.

“The department should give us funds to travel to the marking station but they don’t do that. Instead, they ask us to pay for the travelling cost and pay us back later. This is unfair.”

Another teacher said their payments for marking were taxed at 41% and “then we are left with next to nothing”.

KZN Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the department would have to check what went wrong because, to his knowledge, all teachers were paid before Christmas.

“Kindly tell them to forward their details so that we can address this mistake as soon as possible,” he said.
