Ngizwe Mchunu backs Metro awards after calling for boycott

By Celani Sikhakhane

  • Ngizwe Mchunu joined Durban artists promoting Metro awards in KwaMashu, despite recently calling for a boycott over claims the station ignores maskandi music.
  • He earlier accused Metro FM of exploiting maskandi artists, saying the station does not play their music but still profits from nominations.

Music fans in KwaMashu saw a surprise on Sunday when Ngizwe Mchunu joined a convoy promoting the Metro FM Music Awards.

Mchunu appeared at Wiseman Car Wash, a popular shisanyama spot in the township north of Durban. He drove a Toyota Fortuner branded with Metro awards material.

He moved with local artists who were promoting the event across the city. This comes weeks after he urged maskandi artists and fans to boycott the awards.

Sandile Makhoba, one of the promoters, said they worked with Mchunu during the campaign. He said Mchunu showed no resistance and took part fully.

“I think he has changed his mind because we were with him … promoting the Metro FM Awards and he was over excited,” said Makhoba.

Last month, Mchunu strongly criticised the awards. He accused Metro FM of sidelining maskandi music while still including its artists in nominations.

He said the station does not play maskandi but benefits financially from the genre. He also claimed the music is looked down on.

“Metro FM does not play Maskandi music. In fact they hate us as the Bhinca people,” he said at the time.

Mchunu could not be reached for comment on his change of stance. Reports said he later attended protests against illegal foreign nationals.
