One day after returning from their honeymoon, Nabeelah Khan and her husband, Zaheer Sarang died in a tragic, freak accident in their home in Crosby, Johannesburg on Sunday.

Reports suggest that Nabeelah was electrocuted after touching the metal tap while in the shower and Zaheer was electrocuted when he tried to rescue her.

Residents in the area claim that electrical faults are common in the area.

Hassan Aalim, the couple’s neighbour, said the area had suffered several power outages in recent times.

“The sad thing is that we had been experiencing power outages in the area and complaints had been laid with City Power, but no one responded,” he said.

Aziz Ally, a community activist, told News24 that this was not the first time individuals had been electrocuted when touching taps.

Ally confirmed that the problem had been reported but no response had been provided by City Power.

“It’s just very sad that something so tragic has to happen before we get a response from officials,” he said.

Ally said there needs to be a full investigation because their area’s electrical issues may be due to illegal connections at an informal settlement nearby.

Captain Mavela Masondo, Johannesburg SAPS police spokesperson said the bodies were found at 5.30pm on Sunday.

“It is suspected that the couple was electrocuted. Police are waiting for the post-mortem results that will confirm the cause of death,” he said.
