South Africa’s Siphelele Myeza was stopped in the 11th round by Matt Windle in a bout for the vacant Commonwealth light flyweight title on Saturday night.
The fighter, who hails from KwaZulu-Natal, took on the English boxer at the Premier Banqueting Suite, Burmantofts, Leeds, England.
The previously unbeaten Myeza (8-1-0; 0) was listed as the favourite by some betting sites and managed to hold his own for the majority of the first 10 rounds.
There was little in it before going into the 11th round, when the 32-year-old Windle (7-4-1; 0) backed the South African up against the ropes and dropped him with an overhand right.
Myeza, who is rated at No 6 in South Africa, beat the count but the referee waved the fight off at one minute 42 seconds into the round.
“We fought a good fight but we learnt a great deal. We will go back to the drawing board and take it from there,” Myeza’s manager Michael Sediane said.
“Right now we will focus on the SA title and go back to the international route.”
Myeza secured the fight through former SA bantamweight champion Vusi Malinga who has links with the UK fight promoters.
