The Masakala community in Matatiele is in shock following the discovery of the mutilated body of a 41-year-old woman, identified as Nomajama Khetsiwe.

Her incomplete body was found on Friday near an abandoned homestead. She had been missing since Monday, 12 June.

Traditional leader Chief Morena Letuka revealed that a similar incident had occurred three months ago involving a four-year-old child.

It was the chief who contacted the police to initiate a formal investigation.

Community organisations, the Department of Social Development and the police visited the Khetsiwe family to offer support.

Community activist Petros Majola condemned the brutal murder and called for the protection and counselling of Khetsiwe’s children, aged 16 and 18.

The community, deeply affected by the incident, believes that the perpetrator is someone from within their own community.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu confirmed that a murder case is under investigation and appealed to the community for assistance in identifying the suspect.

Chief Letuka said the community plans to hold a meeting to discuss strategies for assisting the police in their investigation.
