Former Mamelodi Sundowns player Phakamani Mahlambi, who was arrested on Tuesday for domestic abuse, has been released on R5,000 bail.

Phakamani and his girlfriend allegedly argued about a microwave before getting into a physical altercation.

The right-winger spent Tuesday night in police holding cells at the Sebenza cop shop near Kempton Park. He appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on two charges of common assault and domestic violence.

Phakamani played for Sundowns before he was loaned to Chippa United in 2021

A source close to the couple who spoke anonymously told Scrolla.Africa that the pair were at their home near Edenvale when they allegedly fought over a microwave.

After reporting him to the police, Phakamani’s girlfriend allegedly wanted to drop the charges, but the court refused as domestic violence is regarded as a serious offence.

Phakamani, whom coach Gavin Hunt once called a football prodigy, was recently in the news for allegedly faking his age.

The player, who turns 27 in September, started his career with Bidvest Wits and joined the senior team in 2015.

He joined African giants Al Ahly in 2017 and moved to Sundowns a year later.
