KZN News Bites: ‘Our children are taught by ill-qualified teachers’

Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Ladysmith – Learning at Sizakahle Primary School in Ladysmith stopped after a meeting on Wednesday at which parents decided not to continue sending their children to be taught by “ill-qualified” teachers. The parents said it was useless for them to spend the little money they had to transport and feed their children only to be subjected to poor education because the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, led by MEC Mbali Fraser, is refusing to hire qualified teachers.

Eshowe – The Jacob Zuma-led MK Party has strengthened its elections team in KZN by adding four new members to its provincial machinery. In a letter dated 23 April, the office of the secretary-general announced that Mlungisi Zondi, Phumla Magaqa, Sifiso Bhengu and Linda Mabhida will be part of their provincial elections operation. This is as the party continues with its push to dethrone the ANC.

Ramsgate – The Ray Nkonyeni municipality in southern KZN has undertaken to fix the property of a Ramsgate resident whose staff left it in shambles in October last year. The municipal workers were fixing a burst pipe and left the yard unattended. Later a mini dam developed posing a threat to the family and passing motorists. The owner of the property told Scrolla.Africa he was pushed from pillar to post when he asked the municipality to fix its mess. The municipality said yesterday that everything would be fixed by Friday 26 April. It blamed procurement processes for the delay.

eThekwini – The DA in eThekwini has written to Joshua Malcolm, the head of the city fleet, asking him to provide more information regarding the intention to splash R25-million to buy cars for Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda and other senior ANC politicians in the council. The party wants to know the state of the current fleet, which the municipality claims has reached the end of its lifespan, and that Kaunda and his colleagues need new cars. The DA also wants to know who will be the supplier for the new fleet.

Dundee – Endumeni municipality has asked residents to avoid illegal connections and overloading transformers, which damages its infrastructure and leaves people in darkness. The municipality says it understands that winter has arrived, but consumers should exercise patience while using electricity to avoid unplanned outages.
