Mother accused of raping her own son

  • Social workers and police have been accused of failing to protect a 10-year-old boy from abuse in Nongoma.
  • ActionSA is calling for urgent government help for the boy and his sister.

A 10-year-old boy from Bhanganoma near Nongoma was allegedly raped by his own mother.

Neighbours told police about the abuse, but no charges were laid. Instead, the mother was taken to St Benedict Hospital in Nongoma, northern KZN.

ActionSA’s Zwakele Mncwango, who visited the family, said social workers have failed to help the traumatised boy.

“I came to the family and saw the grave situation. The boy is very young, and he doesn’t deserve such horrible treatment from his mother. I’m told that the police did not lay any charges against her.

“Instead, they took her to a hospital where she spent a month and came back to continue the abuse,” said Mncwango.

The mother, who may have mental health issues, allegedly tried to poison both her children after returning from the hospital.

“We are calling for government departments, especially Social Development, to intervene and help these kids because even the daughter is traumatised. These kids need special intervention because they face a serious crisis,” said Mncwango.

Names withheld to protect the children’s identities.
