Menzi on Wednesday: Shame on you, Pirates. Shame on you!

The denial of access to Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos to the Orlando Stadium by Pirates to watch the match between Pirates and Sundowns is a shame.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) took the blame and apologised to SAFA for the “confusion” on Saturday.

“The incident is highly regrettable,” said the PSL In a statement on Monday afternoon and apologised unreservedly to the South African Football Association.

“The PSL investigated the matter and established that the confusion was caused by the League’s failure to inform the host club about the head coach’s attendance as per protocol.”

While it is noble of the PSL to show professionalism and take the blame, the role Pirates played is very disappointing.

Could they not find it in themselves to let this one slide and allow Broos entry into the stadium?

For crying out loud! The gaffer was already at the stadium. We all know and understand Covid-19 protocols, but one person at a stadium with a capacity of about 40,000 would have not caused any health issues.

Pirates personnel could have used their common sense but instead denied Broos entry even if he didn’t have accreditation – but in this case he did.

The Bafana Bafana coach was there for work reasons but just because Pirates were not “told” by the League that he was coming, they shut the gate in his face.

Shame on you Pirates! Shame on you!

Next Saturday Bafana Bafana has a crucial match against Ethiopia away and Broos needed to watch Pirates and Sundowns play, but the lack of professionalism shown by Pirates denied him that opportunity.

Let’s hope Bafana will make the nation proud and come back with maximum points to cement their place on top of Group G in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
