Self-proclaimed kwaito godfather Mdu Masilela and media personality Tbo Touch are at odds with Arthur Mafokate after he listed their names among the performers at his A Night with Legends festival without paying them.
As a result of what he believes is Mafokate’s unwillingness to compensate them, Masilela has withdrawn from the eagerly anticipated music event.
Masilela and Touch are on the lineup of the entertainment legends due to perform at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on 1 October, according to the poster that Mafokate posted on social media.
The two are supposed to perform on the same stage with Mafokate, Kabelo “Bugaluv” Mabalane, award-winning kwaito heavyweight Thebe Mogano, and house music icon Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa.
However Masilela told Scrolla.Africa that he pulled out after being notified by his management that payment had not been made by the organisers.
“I would love to perform because I enjoy performing, I don’t know whether it’s the promoter or Arthur that is the problem,” said Masilela.
Mafokate says that he does not know what this is all about, but the show will continue.
“We are going ahead with the event, and we will be booking more artists to add to the existing lineup.”
Tbo Touch, whose phone rang unanswered, couldn’t be reached for comment.
A Night with Legends is an annual event aimed at honouring legends in the music industry. The inaugural event will kick off with the Kwaito Legends concert.
