A man from Gauteng died on Sunday night after falling from a moving bakkie in Gqeberha.
Police said two men, aged 28 and 30, left a pub in Beach Road, Humewood just before eight on Sunday night.
They walked to a white Isuzu bakkie parked nearby.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the 30-year-old got into the vehicle as the driver.
The younger man also got in on the driver’s side. The bakkie drove off at speed while the driver’s door was still open.
Moments later, the 28-year-old fell out of the moving vehicle.
He hit his head on the pavement and suffered serious injuries to his face and head.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police arrested the driver on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving and culpable homicide.
He is expected to appear in the Gqeberha magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
The deceased man’s name has not been released. Police said this would only happen once his family has been informed.
A video shared on social media showed the moments before the crash.
It appeared the deceased forced himself onto the driver’s lap as the vehicle pulled away with the door still open.
As the bakkie turned, one man fell out.
Atlas Security confirmed both men had been drinking at the pub before the incident.
Wayne Hart from Atlas Security said their role was limited and all questions should be directed to police.
The investigation is ongoing.
