  • Mpho Mafole was shot dead in Kempton Park just three months after joining Ekurhuleni to help fight corruption.
  • A second suspect, Hlanganani Agripper Mncwango, is still on the run, and police have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with the murder of Ekurhuleni forensic auditor Mpho Mafole.

Mafole, who was the head of corporate and forensic audits, was killed in a drive-by shooting on 30 July while driving along the R23 in Esselen, Kempton Park.

Gauteng police say a second suspect, Hlanganani Agripper Mncwango, is still on the run. A warrant of arrest has been issued, and police are urging him to hand himself in.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the arrest and said the suspect will appear in the Kempton Park Magistratesโ€™ Court on 23 July to face a charge of murder.

โ€œWe are urging Mncwango to hand himself over, or for anyone who knows where he is to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,โ€ said Nevhuhulwi.

Mafole had only been in the job for three months when he was killed. He had joined the City of Ekurhuleni after working for 14 years at the Auditor-General of South Africa.

He was tasked with investigating corruption in the municipality, which has been facing several scandals.

His murder shocked the city and raised fears that he may have been targeted because of his work.

Mafoleโ€™s family spokesperson, Sanza Mmatli, said they had not been officially informed of the arrest.

โ€œWe found out through the media and journalists requesting interviews. Police have promised to meet with the family later today,โ€ he said.
