Ayanda “Ntunja” Nkosi has taken time out from the legendary Mahotella Queens to pursue her solo career, but says she remains a member of the celebrated group that was formed in 1964, though it is left with only one original member, Hilda Tloubatla.
The youngest Mahotella Queens member, Nkosi joined the famed mbaqanga outfit in 2013 after she was spotted by the members while performing as an opening act for the group.
In 2020 she released her first single, titled “Imali”, while still performing with the Queens.
The song was well received, becoming the number one downloaded song on ITunes during that period.
Nkosi said before joining the group she was pursuing a solo career but decided to put that dream on hold to allow herself time to learn from the legends.
“I was humbled that they saw fit to have me join their brand and trusted that I was capable of carrying their legacy forward. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity.
“Through the 10-year journey I have learned the importance of respect, being humble and knowing one’s heritage.”
She added that the journey also gave her the opportunity to travel the world to learn about different cultures and music.
“I have grown a lot through this journey as a musician and it is about time the world meets Ntunja as a brand,” she added.
“Mahotella Queens will always be my home but this is my opportunity to show the world who I am outside the group.
“I am happy that I am slowly putting a stamp of [my own] identity. Last year while performing in Mauritius I was invited to perform at Reunion Island and in France at the Fanm-Faular Festival,” she added.
She was nominated in the Basadi in Music Awards in the “best traditional music” category in 2021.
