  • From 4 November, petrol falls 1 cent a litre despite a R1.50 levy cut. Diesel falls R1.10 to R1.20 wholesale.
  • Paraffin’s maximum shop price rises R3.66 a litre. It carries no fuel levy, so it gets no relief. Gas rises R1.83 a kilogram.

Petrol will cost 1 cent a litre less from Wednesday, 4 November, even though the government is cutting the fuel levy by R1.50 a litre, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced on Tuesday, 3 November. Diesel falls by R1.10 a litre (0.05% sulphur) and R1.20 a litre (0.005% sulphur) at wholesale. Households that use paraffin or gas face increases.

A litre of 95 petrol will cost R30.24 in Gauteng, from R30.25, and R29.37 at the coast. A litre of 93 petrol will cost R29.87 in Gauteng.

The levy cut, announced in the mini-budget on 21 October, takes R1.50 a litre off petrol and R3 off diesel until 1 December. It then falls to R1 on petrol and R1.50 on diesel until 5 January 2027. The department said the adjustments reflect higher international oil product prices and a weaker rand against the US dollar. They also include a higher slate levy of 135.84c a litre, up 48.18c. Scrolla calculates that without the levy cut, petrol would have gone up about R1.49 a litre and diesel about R1.90.

Paraffin is different. It carries no fuel levy, so it gets no relief. The department’s Robert Maake said:

“Paraffin at wholesale level will increase by R2.75 per litre. At retail level, it will increase by R3.66 per litre.”

Scrolla calculates that takes the maximum shop price from R31.82 to about R35.48. Scrolla reported last week that early data pointed to a wholesale rise of R2.25 to R2.88.

Gas is also going up. The maximum retail price of LPGas will rise by R1.83 a kilogram across the country, and by R2.08 a kilogram in Saldanha in the Western Cape. On a 9kg cylinder, that is R16.47 more. The inland price goes to R39.64 a kilogram.

Diesel’s fall is at wholesale, and retail diesel prices are not regulated.
