A Limpopo policewoman has been arrested for allegedly murdering six relatives to claim R10-million in insurance payouts.
“She would take out life and funeral policies on behalf of people she knew and make herself the beneficiary,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Following an extensive investigation led by Detective Captain Keshi Mabunda, the 43-year-old sergeant now faces six murder charges and 17 counts of fraud.
Brigadier Mathe explained that the officer’s killing spree began in 2019.
“Her victims were known to her and were from destitute and disadvantaged backgrounds. Some were disabled or mentally challenged,” said Mathe.
The officer allegedly collected around R10-million from six insurance-related murders.
She was arrested at her police station while on duty.
Police Chief General Fannie Masemola condemned the officer’s actions.
“For a police officer entrusted with such a great responsibility to be involved in such acts is an absolute disgrace,” said General Masemola.
“She abused her powers by insuring those who trusted her. This arrest sends a strong warning to all involved that the law will find you and punish you.”
The officer will appear in court on Friday to face charges of six murders and 17 counts of fraud.
This is not the first time a police officer has been caught committing such crimes.
Scrolla.Africa broke the story of convicted serial murderer Rosemary Nomia Ndlovu.
Ndlovu was sentenced to 25 years for each count of the six murders. She was also given 10 years each for 14 other counts including insurance fraud, incitement and attempted murder and an additional five years for defeating the ends of justice.
