Leverkusen crowned Bundesliga champions!

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga for the very first time, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year title streak.

Florian Wirtz grabbed a hatrick as the leaders wrapped up the league with a 5-0 home win over Werder Bremen to run away with the title with five games to spare.

It was scenes of jubilation as those inside the Bay Arena celebrated a Bundesliga crown for the very first time in the club’s 120-year history.

It was the first time in over a decade that Bayern were beaten to a title as Alonso’s men repeated what Jurgen Klopp did for Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012.

Leverkusen beat Harry Kane and Bayern in February by three goals to nil to open up a five point gap at the top of the table.

A poor run of results further increased that lead at the top, with an invincible season still on the cards for the newly crowned champions who won 25 and drew four games thus far.

The nickname “Neverkusen” has finally left them, too, with near-missed opportunities no longer a worry under Alonso’s remarkable reign.

Their German Cup and Europa League progress leaves treble hopes alive in the season run-in, while Bayern’s Bundesliga record points tally of 91 set in the 2012/13 campaign is also up for grabs with Leverkusen currently on 79.
