- Learners at Madisong Secondary say the principal used violence as punishment for missing holiday classes.
- Education officials asked parents to lay criminal charges while the investigation continues.
The principal of Madisong Secondary School in Temba, Tshwane, has been placed on precautionary suspension following serious allegations that he physically assaulted learners.
Learners say the principal beat one girl in February after she missed a holiday catch-up programme. Another learner reported experiencing hand pain after she was also punished for missing the same classes.
The learners claim that the use of corporal punishment is not an isolated incident but a regular part of the school’s disciplinary measures.
The Gauteng Department of Education has now stepped in. Spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that an internal investigation has been launched.
“We advised parents to open criminal cases with the police for investigations. The principal will be precautionarily reporting to the District Office pending the outcome of this investigation,” he said.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane said he is upset by the claims and promised swift action if the allegations prove true.
“We remind all staff that corporal punishment is strictly prohibited by law and any violence will be met with swift and decisive action,” he said.
