Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.
Nquthu: The South African Communist Party in KwaZulu-Natal has intensified its campaign ahead of the local government elections as a standalone organisation outside of the ANC for the first time.
Leaders, especially in Nquthu in the north of KwaZulu-Natal, are circulating SACP posters bearing the face of late party stalwart Eric Stalin Mtshali to drum up votes. Some posts are pleading with voters to “do it for Chris Hani” or “do it for Stalin Mtshali.” Mtshali died seven years ago at the age of 87.
This comes after the SACP Central Executive Committee resolved to contest the November local government elections outside of the ANC across the country. However, this is not the first time KZN leaders of the Communist Party have contested elections outside of the ANC. In 2011, certain ANC wards in eThekwini suffered a major blow when SACP leaders contested the local government elections. Those leaders were former ANC councillors sympathetic to then eThekwini Regional ANC Chairperson James Nxumalo, who was locked in a serious political fight with Zandile Gumede.
Durban: The City of eThekwini has announced that more than 40 000 visitors are expected to attend the Hollywoodbets Durban July this year, with direct spending estimated at R230 million and a broader contribution of approximately R798 million to the local economy.
According to eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, an estimated 1 105 jobs will be supported through the event’s value chain. “Through the Durban Fashion Fair programme, we are nurturing the next generation of fashion entrepreneurs. Nine emerging designers who have completed a rigorous ten-month mentorship programme will showcase their talent through the prestigious DFF Rising Stars Collection on the Celebration Stage at the Hollywoodbets Durban July,” said Xaba.
ICC: KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has laid bare the devastating impact of the province’s water crisis, warning that teaching and learning in schools are being interrupted and industries are threatening to close, risking the livelihoods of employees and employers. Ntuli was speaking at the Water Summit held at the Durban ICC on Wednesday. He lamented the lack of consequence management, which he said has given rise to the crisis facing the province.
