Pietermaritzburg: The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) in KwaZulu-Natal has urged its members to prioritise women when nominating ward councillors, rather than allowing men to occupy key positions ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections in November.
The call was made on Tuesday at an ANCWL gathering in Pietermaritzburg, where league leadership urged all members to actively champion the nomination of women councillors to lead municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal.
ANCWL’s Nokuthula Nqaba said women must use ANC branch processes to ensure they are not merely placed as Proportional Representatives in municipal councils, but are given key leadership positions.
The call follows growing concern that men have used their influence to secure more votes, including from female voters, putting women candidates at a disadvantage.
Claremont: Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested two suspects, aged 29 and 35, in connection with kidnapping and extortion cases. The arrests were made during an operation carried out in Claremont and Malvern by officers from the Pinetown Trio Task Team and the KwaDabeka Field Unit, acting on information provided by Crime Intelligence about suspects wanted for offences committed within the Pinetown policing precinct.
On Tuesday evening, the operation yielded results when the first suspect was arrested in Claremont. The second suspect was arrested in Malvern and was found in possession of two vehicles and a replica firearm believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes.
Durban: The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in KwaZulu-Natal has expressed support for Premier Thami Ntuli’s measured, lawful, and leadership-driven approach to addressing undocumented migration in the province.
On the eve of Africa Day, the IFP reaffirmed that responsible leadership requires both compassion and decisive action in order to safeguard communities, protect economic opportunities for law-abiding citizens, and uphold the rule of law.
The party noted that since the launch of the Engangeni Ngesango Iyafohla campaign in 2024, the province has seen a coordinated response to undocumented migration and related criminal activity.
“Under Premier Ntuli’s leadership, law enforcement agencies and relevant state institutions have intensified compliance operations, leading to the arrest and deportation of undocumented foreign nationals, enforcement action against businesses found to be contravening immigration and labour laws, and stronger coordination between government agencies responsible for border management, community safety, and economic regulation,” the IFP said.
