KZN news bites: The lottery can do more for the people, says royal in-law

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

Durban: The son-in-law of the late Zulu King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu says the national lottery can help more people if it is run properly. Businessman Moses Tembe, who is married to Princess Ntandoyesizwe kaZwelithini, sister to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, spoke out after his company, Sizekhaya Holdings, won the bid to run the South African National Lottery. Tembe said he believes the lottery can be a powerful force for good. “We have seen glimpses of this in South Africa. In its 25 years of operation, the lottery has funded thousands of organisations that contribute to much-needed community development. But we believe that it can deliver so much more. That is why Sizekhaya Holdings bid for the lottery,” he said. He said the company wants to make sure that the funds raised go back into uplifting communities. Tembe is a well-known businessman with investments across various sectors, and this win could mark a major shift in how lottery funds are distributed and managed.

Pinetown: The Democratic Alliance in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has sent urgent questions to Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka after claims of mismanagement in the Pinetown Education District. The questions centre on a former principal of Pinetown Girls’ High who was suspended about three years ago for alleged financial misconduct. The same person has now reportedly been appointed as an Acting Circuit Education Manager in the same district. The DA wants to know how this happened and whether proper vetting was done before the appointment.

Pietermaritzburg: The African National Congress at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature says Youth Month should not just be a time of remembrance, but a wake-up call for real change. Mafika Mndebele, a former youth leader, said the struggle of young people has moved from the streets to the boardroom. “The youth must lead, not from the margins, but from the centre of economic development,” said Mndebele. He said young people must grab opportunities and be given space to help rebuild the country.
