Durban: Maskandi’s biggest rivals are set to share a stage this Saturday and Smirnoff 1818 is making it happen. The event celebrates the music that has kept the heritage of many black communities alive.

Diageo South Africa made the announcement, confirming a deliberate investment in a culture that has driven Smirnoff’s growth over the years.

Tamika Sewnarain, Senior Brand Manager for Smirnoff at Diageo South Africa, said the event called Smirnoff 1818’s Makoya Imbizo will take place at Berea Rovers in Durban on Saturday, 30 May.

The highlight of the day will be performances by maskandi icons Khuzani Mpungose (Indlamlenze) and Mthandeni Manqele (Igcokama Elisha). The two giants have massive followings across the country, and their long-running rivalry has pushed maskandi to new heights.

Tongaat: The National Prosecuting Authority has welcomed the sentencing of a 41-year-old man to double life imprisonment plus six additional years. The Durban High Court convicted him on charges of murder, attempted murder, assault, and malicious injury to property. The crimes were committed in the Sinembe area in December 2024.

The accused was in a domestic relationship with the complainant in the assault matter, who is also the mother of the two young children involved in the murder and attempted murder charges, aged three and seven.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of one child, life imprisonment for the attempted murder of the other, five years for assault, and one year for malicious injury to property.

Scottburgh: The arrest and conviction of a South African Police Services officer has sent a clear message that no one is above the law. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements made the statement on Thursday following the conviction of Mr Siyabonga Cele.

RTI Park Rynie caught him driving at 183 km/h in a 120 km/h zone, in violation of the National Road Traffic Act. The Scottburgh Magistrates Court found him guilty and sentenced him to six months in prison, with the option to pay a fine of R12,000.
