Mayville: Police station commanders in KwaZulu-Natal who have failed to make progress in their communities over the past three years have been warned not to even consider applying for top posts.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba issued the blunt warning during an accountability session at the Durban Christian Centre Jesus Dome in Mayville, addressing District Commissioners, Station Commanders, Detective Commanders and all commissioned officers in the province.
“If you are a Station Commander and you are seated here, and your station has been declining for the past three years, the question you should be asking yourself is whether you love your job or not. We will advertise Station Commander posts and other junior to middle management posts very soon. Before you put a pen on that application form, ask yourself if you are willing to serve the people of this province,” said General Makoba.
KwaDukuza: Three suspects in the murder of seven family members made their second appearance before the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. It is alleged that on 21 April 2026, the victims were kidnapped from their home in Newark and their bodies were later discovered in Melmoth. The deceased, all related, were aged between 20 and 83 years.
The accused, Linda Blessing Mthiyane (28), Bongumenzi Mpungose (26) and Mthandeni Luyanda Mthiyane (21), face multiple charges including housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances, seven counts of kidnapping and seven counts of murder. Mpungose faces an additional charge of rape, while Linda Blessing Mthiyane faces a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. Although all three had previously abandoned their bail applications, Mpungose informed the court of his intention to apply for bail, with a date to be set following consultation with his attorney.
KwaXimba: The City of eThekwini Metro has built two human capital centres in KwaXimba and Molweni to help rural youth bridge the digital divide and participate meaningfully in the economy.
Speaking on behalf of eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba, Councillor Ntando Khuzwayo acknowledged the barriers facing rural youth.
“Distance and limited access to resources have stood between our rural youth and their aspirations. Today, we are changing that reality. These Centres of Excellence bring opportunity directly to our communities, equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and digital tools they need to unlock their potential, access economic opportunities, and shape a better future for themselves and generations to come,” said Khuzwayo.
He said the centres demonstrate the city’s commitment to ensuring no community is left behind in the journey towards inclusive growth and development.
