KZN news bites: MKP woos church women ahead of elections

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news.

uMkhanyakude: Regional leaders of uMkhonto weSizwe Party in the uMkhanyakude Region reminded women of the Apostolic Church about how the organisation’s President, Jacob Zuma, has always valued their role in the struggle. The leaders recalled how women helped whisk freedom fighters to eSwatini and Mozambique during apartheid. The charm worked, with women young and old screaming and clapping their hands in the church.

This happened on Thursday when the party visited the church service to donate water tanks, as the district has been battling a water shortage.

The visit comes after the party also visited the Shembe Church, where they donated cattle.

MKP’s Ndodephethe Mthethwa told the gathering that the party still relies on the power of women, believing it will help them take over several municipalities in the poverty-stricken district of the KZN Far North.

KwaMashu: The South African Police Service will bid a final farewell and give a final salute to the late Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo during an official funeral in KwaMashu on Saturday, 30 May 2026.

Sgt Khuzwayo succumbed to gunshot injuries in hospital this week. He was ambushed by suspects who fired several shots at him and his colleague Captain Cornelius Nel on 30 April 2026 in Mount Edgecombe. Captain Nel was declared dead at the scene and has already been laid to rest in an official state funeral. Police say investigations are underway in pursuit of the suspects who brutally killed the two Crime Intelligence officers.

uThukela: The Democratic Alliance in uThukela District Municipality says it is appalled by yet another consequence of the IFP-led administration’s financial collapse. The Provincial Executive Committee has summoned IFP Mayor iNkosi N.B. Shabalala and Municipal Manager Mr LS Jili to account for the unlawful use of conditional grant funding for operational expenditure, including salaries, in direct violation of the Division of Revenue Act and grant agreements.

The DA claims that last year the Municipal Manager secretly entered into a High Court consent order with RASP Consultants without Council approval. He then failed to honour the first R3 million instalment in December 2025, despite R12 million sitting in the bank, as confirmed by the MEC for Finance.
