KZN news bites: Mkhwanazi’s Easter tournament scores big for local youth

Impendle – KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has launched a sports tournament to keep young people away from crime and alcohol. Over the Easter weekend, Wydad FC were crowned champions of the Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Sports Against Crime Easter Tournament, played across several fields in Upper Makhuzeni, Impendle. The winning team in the men’s football division walked away with gold medals, a trophy, new kit and R10,000 in cash. Runners-up Atlanta FC received silver medals, new kit and R5,000, while the third- and fourth-placed teams took home R3,000 and R2,000 respectively. The village’s female soccer team beat the SAPS Midlands team and earned gold medals, a soccer ball and R2,000. Netball winners also took home R1,000 and new sports gear. More than 2,500 young people gathered at the Upper Makhuzeni sports field for the final matches. Mkhwanazi said the goal of the tournament was to give the youth a positive outlet during the holidays and help keep them away from drugs, alcohol and crime.

Pietermaritzburg – The DA in KwaZulu-Natal has raised the alarm over what it calls a financial crisis in the province’s Department of Education. DA MPL Sakhile Mngadi says critical infrastructure projects have been halted due to non-payment by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. He also warned that thousands of teachers could go unpaid if the crisis isn’t urgently addressed. Mngadi accused current Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka of showing “arrogance and inaction” in the face of the department’s collapse.
